All about siberian huskies

In this blog is all the information you need to know about siberian huskies; from temperament to colours.

About siberian huskies : origin

Siberian huskies originated in eastern siberia and are a working dog breed. Siberian huskies are mostly recognized by their thickly furred double coat, sickle tail, erect triangle ears and their distinct coat markings. Siberian huskies are a very energetic and resilient breed thus making them good working dogs. The siberian huskies ancestors came from the extremely cold environement of the siberian arctic and where bred by the chukchi of north eastern asia. From here the siberian husky was imported during the nome gold rush to alaska and spread into the US and canada. The siberian husky then quickly established the status of a show dog and house pet.

About siberian huskies : appearance

As said above siberian huskies are mostly recognized by their thick double coat, erect triangular ears, sickle bushy tail and their distinct markings. The siberian huskies most recognizable trait is their wolf like appearance and their piercing eyes, most commonly blue. The siberian husky may have either blue, brown or brown and blue eyes.

Siberian huskies come in a variety of colors and patterns, usually with white paws and legs, facial markings, and tail tip. The most common colors are black and white, grey and white, copper-red and white, and pure white, though many individuals have blondish, or piebald spotted. Striking masks, spectacles, and other facial markings occur in wide variety.

The Siberian Husky's coat comprises two layers: a dense undercoat and a longer topcoat of short, straight guard hairs. It protects the dogs effectively against harsh Arctic winters, but the coat also reflects heat in the summer. It is able to withstand temperatures as low as −58 °F to −76 °F (−50 °C to −60 °C).

Male siberian huskies are bigger than female siberian huskies. The siberian husky is a medium sized dog. The male husky normally grows between 21-24 inches tall and the female grows between 20-22 inches tall. The male siberian husky weighs between 45-60 pounds whereas the female siberian husky weighs between 35-50 pounds.

About siberian huskies : Temperament

The siberian husky is a working dog and therefore has a high energy and requires alot of exercise. They have served as companions and sled dogs, but they are unsuitable as guard dogs. Over time, this combination of factors has lent the Siberian Husky a strong sense of gentleness and devotion. They are very social dogs towards other dogs and people but not as social towards smaller pets and cats.

About siberian huskies :behaviour

The Siberian Husky has been described as a behavioral representative of the wolf. The siberian huskies are known to howl, sing and talk rather than bark. A fifteen-minute daily obedience training class will serve well for Siberian Huskies. Siberian Huskies are a very stubborn, independant and dominant breed of dog. Siberians need consistent training and do well with a "Nothing In Life Is Free" training program. They are extremely intelligent and after learning a new skill will often decide when to show off this skill when asked to perform it. However never walk a siberian husky of the leash because it won't come back.

About siberian huskies : health

When a siberian husky is well looked after it will leave for about 12 to 15 years. It is an active dog so hip dysplasia is not un common for a siberian husky to have. Other health problems may be genetic defects of the eye such as cataracts, corneal dystrophy and progressive retinal atrophy.

About siberian huskies : food

The siberian husky would eat about anything. It needs a diet that is favoured in protein eg chicken or other meats. I feed mine on pet food that is high in chicken and it also helps its joints. The siberian husky drinks water and can't digest carbs such as white bread.

About siberian huskies : owning a siberian husky

Siberian huskies are great pets and are a lot more difficult than other dogs to look after. When owning a siberian husky it must get at least an hour of exercise a day and a run about in a secured area. The siberian husky is an escape artist so you must have 6ft high fencing around your garden so it doesn't escape. You will also need to put the fencing a foot into the ground so it doesn't dig under it. On the subject of digging siberian huskies love to dig holes in the garden so it may not be the right dog for you if you like your plants and garden. Siberians are knowin to howl so keeping them outdoors at night may not be a good idea because the neighbours may complain.

The siberian husky is an independent dog breed and it likes to things the way it wants ie. it likes to walk around like you would around your house so it feels likes it part of the pack however make it clear to him where you don't want your siberian husky to go and after a while it will learn. The siberian husky is a very social dog and when it is left alone it gets stressed so another dog in the family to keep him company is a must.

If you have a cat in the house you will need to train the siberian husky because it may chase it or try to kill it. Another thing about the siberian husky is its grooming. It sheds its thick double coat twice a year for a bout 2 and a half weeks. In those 5 weeks of the year you will be almost breathing in dog hair everywhere you go so give it a good grooming everyday.
